Hi,
We’re looking to develop a site selling “standard” products as well as custom printed products. I’m looking for a shopping cart that can do the following things either as standard or with extra modules. Don’t really want to get into custom programming.
1) The ability to calculate the final price of a product based on the options selected ie width, height, backing material, quantity, lamination etc. (Essential)
2) Preferably to be able to calculate this and update the total on the fly so the customer can see the price update as they select the options. (Desirable)
3) To be able to take this final spec and price and produce a quotation that the customer can choose to have emailed to them and that could be saved to the system and/or emailed to us. (Desirable)
4) To allow customers to enter custom sizes when selecting a product (ie 1273mm x 549mm). Obviously this won’t be possible with drop down menus so text input fields I assume are the only way to do this. (Essential)
5) A mechanism for customers to upload their own artwork to the system when/after making a purchase. (Almost Essential)
6) Could be free or paid, preferably open source with support available. (Desirable)
7) We would prefer to own the software rather than use a hosted solution. (Essential)
PHP based. (Desirable)
I know this can be done because I’ve seen many sites that do similar – Too many for them all to be custom made. Any help with this would be really appreciated as we’re drawing a bit of a blank at the moment.
Thanks.
Hi,
I just received an order on my online store from someone in Malaysia.
- It was for one of the cheaper items on the store £65.
- The shipping and billing address are the same.
- They paid with Mastercard.
- They tried to complete the transaction twice but it failed with a Paypal 15005 error. On the 3rd attempt they were successful. 15005 means the issuing bank declined the transaction. This can happen for a number of reasons ie. if they input their details in incorrectly. However it could also be if they were trying cards which had been cancelled.
Does this seem suspicious? What should I do to make sure I don’t get ripped off and end up with a chargeback?
I’m a new store so don’t have much experience with this sort of thing.
Thanks!

Hello everyone,
I’d like to address this question to your experience in the business side of eCommerce, taking into consideration any knowledge you may have in regards to how Merchant Account providers and other parties involved in the process would view this kind of a situation.
I’d like register a business (for online retail) under an XYZ name. I will use this business as my main stage for all business activities (so far there’s nothing unusual here, typical setup). Now, I would also like to register another business name (make it ABC) as a “front” for my business operations as far as customer side goes. ABC would serve sort of like a brand name so that the public would have easier time associating the name with the products offered. The reason for this is that down the road I will venture into other markets, selling products for which yet another brand name would make more sense, again for the same clarity reasons – let’s say EFG.
For efficiency and centralization of the operations I’d process everything through XYZ and simply be visible to the public as ABC, and later also as EFG.
Here’s my question. From what you know, would this kind of a setup cause complications in any of the realms of eCommerce, credit card processing or anything of that sort?
Any feedback is appreciated
Thanks!

I came across www.Ecwid.com last week. It is made by x-cart developers, is free and works with an existing site. I am setting up a mod-x cms website for a client who wants to sell a couple of items. We were going to use paypal add to cart buttons until I noticed the ecwid addon/extra.
I am unsure if to use it for a client as it is so new, just wondered what people thought of it?
I just got notice from Authorize.net about “MasterCard/Discover Partial Authorization”. Oh joy. Time to take my shopping cart code out for a whirl!

I have a client that wants to build a massive ecommerce site. About 200 different vendors and thousands of products. They also want to have the 30 second commercials on the product pages and integrate banner ads. The site will have about 5 category/subcategories.
Typically I would build this in oscommerce, but I have been trying to move all my php development to joomla lately as it seems that all of my clients want all the calendar/social functionality too.
Is this doable in joomla? Should I do it in oscommerce? is there maybe a 3rd option? Anyone have any suggestions/insight?
Thanks!

My family owns a small lighting store in Florida. We have a current website that is not good. I have been slowly saving money to build a nice site that really reflects what we offer in addition to allowing ecommerce purchases.
I have no idea what my budget should be for this sort of thing. I contracted with a small local web company and they quoted a price of $2200 for the project. The project turned out to be a complete failure in that the shopping cart could not handle our quantity of goods in some sort of manageable fashion. I ended up just writing off the amount and going with a pre-done industry website. There are lighting website providers that provide turnkey websites with product in categories. The issue with this solution is that every brick and mortar lighting store uses them. I do not want to look like joes lighting 5 miles away and jan lighting 10 miles away. Plus I think the website sucks (although not worse than mine)!
I want a website similar to farreys.com in terms of search-ability and content of goods.
I would imagine total skus of 5000 plus on the site and would like to be able to have clients search by manufacturer and category (i.e. chandelier / contemporary)
Right now my site is averaging around 500 – 800 visits a month from what I would consider good local traffic.
Do you think I will be throwing money away with this level of visitors? Is my project going to cost a million dollars for this many skus???
I need help and am scared of throwing away a ton of money on something that is going to fail again.
Thanks
Chris
